Why Armadillo Merino® doesn't smell

When a customer recently asked us why our garments do not smell, I thought we had this covered on the website, but I was wrong. I am not sure how we missed talking more about this as it is important, and unique to merino wool, so here goes.

Why doesn’t Armadillo Merino® smell?

You sweat to help to cool your body, and your sweat does not smell. The human body has more than 3,000,000 sweat glands, which continually secrete moisture. Sweat by itself does not have any odour, however if sweat remains on the skin for a period of time, bacteria are likely to grow, creating the body odour that many find offensive. The body odour is due to the volatile fatty acids produced by these bacteria as a waste product.

How does Armadillo Merino® succeed in eliminating body odour smell on clothing when synthetics and other materials fail?

First, merino wool greatly reduces the requirement to sweat as it is more efficient than other textiles at absorbing sweat and evaporating it into the air. Merino wool is known for keeping your skin dry when you sweat, and this is important. It does this as it can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in liquid, far greater than most other fibres. Nylon or polyester for example can only absorb about 5% of its weight, so when you wear a nylon top your skin is wetter, and you provide a greater opportunity for bacteria to grow.

Merino wool absorb 35%

Second as your Armadillo Merino® is moving the moisture off your skin, the sweat is bound within the structure, and so is not available for the microbes to grow which cause body odour.

Finally, Merino wool fibres are scaly and studies have shown that bacteria are more attracted to the smooth, positively charged surface of a synthetic fibre than the scaly surface of a merino fibre which carries no charge thus bacteria are less likely to penetrate it.  Do not worry, the scales are so small you cannot see or feel them.

You will note that all of this is 100% natural. No chemical treatments or washes and no fancy marketing trying to hide the chemical wash.  We like to think that merino wool is pretty smart when it comes to odour management, and scientifically it has been proven to out perform synthetics, which we think is pretty cool!

What does this mean?

smell generating bacteira (1)

Armadillo Merino® garments will not smell!

The smell generating bacteria that grow on your sweat or your synthetic clothing simply put do not like to grow on Armadillo Merino®, which means your Armadillo Merino® garments do not smell. Try wearing them for several days in a row, and you may smell, from bacteria growing on your sweat on your skin, but your Armadillo Merino® will not.

We have had customers do this and tell us they are amazed or this is a lifesaver for them, as they no longer have to put up with smelly cotton or polyester base layer. We say, just try it.
